Fireworks

Germans shoot astounding amounts of fireworks. Not even 20 thousand inhabitants, but it's still going strong half an hour after midnight. It doesn't matter that the show feels enough after 5 minutes. 5 minutes is also how long it used to take in my town of comparable size back in Poland 10 years ago. Then and there every sky fountain was an experience valuable enough to wade in the snows at night to find an observation spot in the hills just out of town. Past those five minutes, only single flashes went off any longer. Here in Saxony only after an hour.

Niemcy strasznie napieprzają fajerwerkami. Niecałe 20 tys. mieszkańców, a pół godziny po północy wciąż srogo. To nic, że wystarczy 5 minut, żeby nasycić się spektaklem. 5 minut to też czas strzelania w moim przedwyjazdowym mieście tej samej wielkości w Polsce, 10 lat temu. Tam i wtedy każda fontanna na niebie była przeżyciem, na tyle cenna, żeby przedzierać się w środku nocy przez śniegi gdzieś za obrzeżami miasta, żeby mieć dobry widok ze wzgórza. Po tych pięciu minutach błyskały już tylko pojedyńcze niedobitki. W Saksonii dopiero po godzinie.

It's a strange sight. Colorful lights, music, no windows. DJ close to the wall, and a dozen of people sprinkled across the room. All facing the DJ, his gear and speakers. They shake and undulate, seemingly making no sounds, not bothering anyone. It appears as if each is here alone, just for themself – except for the ones in the corners who move a lot less, and talk instead. Those are facing each other.

Dziwne widowisko. Kolorowe światła, muzyka, żadnych okien. Przy ścianie DJ, po pomieszczeniu rozproszony tuzin ludzi zwróconych w stronę DJa, jego konsoli i głośników. gibają się spokojnie, nie wadząc nikomu. Wydaje się, że każdy jest tu sam dla siebie, oprócz tych w kącie, którzy nie gibają się, tylko rozmawiają. Oni są zwróceni ku siebie nawzajem.

"Znajomości" (roughly "contacts"). I'm not sure if this word is still used in Poland. I can't find an exact translation into English. sure, there's "networking", but that doesn't fully reflect all the aspects of the original. Chiefly because "networking" is neutral, while "znajomości" have a negative feel.

Nie wiem, czy te słowo jeszcze w Polsce funkcjonuje. W angielskim nie potrafię wskazać odpowiednika. Owszem, jest „networking”, ale to nie wyczerpuje definicji „znajomości”. Angielskie jest neutralne, a polskie negatywnie nacechowane.

This time I'm having trouble with flat availability again, but not because of high demand – I'm not searching in an attractive city, but in a less busy area – but instead because of my requirements regarding the flat itself. Once I check one requirement in the flat search engine, the number of matching offers drops from 73 to 10.

Mieszkanie z udogodnieniami

Historia zatacza koło. Wracam do tematu z początku bloga, czyli do przeprowadzki. Tym razem też mam problemy z dostępnością mieszkań, ale nie z powodu wielkiego popytu – nie szukam w atrakcyjnym mieście, ale dalej na uboczu – tylko przez moje wymagania w kwestii wyposażenia. Wystarczy, że w wyszukiwarce ofert poproszę o jedną właściwość, a liczba ogłoszeń spada z 73 do 10.

There are photos and paintings which look overdone. Oversaturated, fairy-tale landscapes evoking pure emotions, which are available to the ideal gods atop Mount Olympus. Emotions which are seemingly reachable, but those we know come from a combination of memories, experiences, and subtle parts of the scenery, instead of what grabs our immediate attention.

Są zdjęcia i obrazy, które wyglądają na przerysowane. Przesycone kolorami, bajkowe scenerie, wzbudzają czyste uczucia, które dostępne są wyidealizowanym bogom na szczycie Olimpu. Uczucia niby osiągalne, ale przecież wiemy, że tak naprawdę uczucia powstają z połączenia wspomnień, doświadczeń i niepozornych części otoczenia, a nie tylko z tego, co bezpośrednio przed oczami.

While browsing the net, I sometimes come across people who are very attached to what they own. Their land, their house, the money they earned. Attempts to make them help others with e.g. taxes are met with the response that they alone are responsible for their own achievements, and they don't owe anyone anything. "I made this with my own hands", "I earned this alone", "no one was helping me". They demonstrate the individualism of their work and the lack of outside help, showing that there are no grounds for anyone else to decide what to do with the fruits of their labor.

„Do wszystkiego doszedłem sam”

Czasem czytam po internetach teksty ludzi, którzy są przywiązani do tego, co mają. Do ziemi, do mieszkania, do zarobionych pieniędzy. Próby zmuszenia ich do pomocy innym, np. przez podatki, odrzucają argumentując to tym, że swoje osiągnięcia zawdzięczają wyłącznie sobie, i innym nic od nich się nie należy. „Moimi własnymi rękami zrobione”, „sama jedna to zarobiłam”, „bez niczyjej pomocy”. Podkreślają indywidualizm swoich osiągnięć i brak pomocy z zewnątrz, która by mogła stanowić podstawę do tego, żeby ktoś inny mógł rozporządzać owocami ich wysiłków.

This post is about nature. It is widely known that nature differs between localities. Poland and Germany are no exception. There you have bears and bisons, and here only wolves. There you can find coniferous trees, whereas here (Cologne) it is said that the ancient Romans did not recognize a pine cone.

Tym razem o przyrodzie. Jak powszechnie wiadomo, w różnych miejscach świata przyroda różni się. Nie inaczej jest z Polską i Niemcami. Tam żubry i niedźwiedzie, a tu tylko wilki. Tam drzewa iglaste, a tu (w Kolonii) podobno starożytni Rzymianie nie wiedzieli, co to szyszka.

Tyle określeń na jedną rzecz, a każde z trochę innym znaczeniem. Jak Eskimosi mają tysiąc słów na określenie śniegu, tak Polacy na gluty. Może z tego samego powodu: częste obserwacje rodzą potrzebę precyzji. W innych językach nie ma aż tylu: w angielskim są chyba tylko „snot”, może „goo”, a znajomi potwierdzają, że ani rosyjski, ani estoński nie dobijają do pięciu. Polski jest szczególnie zasmarkany.

Or maybe: fluk, glut, smark, gil, koza? Those are all Polish words for the same things: snot, with small differences in meaning. Where Eskimos have a thousand words for snow, the Polish have a thousand for snot. Perhaps it's for the same reason: frequent encounters make precision desirable. No other language I know about has so many: English barely has four, including questionable ones. My friends report that neither Estonian or Russian match even that. Polish is an especially snotty language.

Ostatnio zainteresowały mnie dwie powieści przesączone tematyką futbolu amerykańskiego, napisane w stylu pół-snu przez komentatora sportowego. Pierwsza z nich to „Kroniki CFL Tima Tebowa” (The Tim Tebow CFL Chronicles, ang.), a druga to 17776 (ang.). Obie są tu podlinkowane.

My friend recently complained that one florist charged 50 EUR for the same flowers that another priced at only 20 EUR. I know this feeling. It comes with thoughts like "why would I pay extra?" and "they have the gall". But nowadays, I think this way much less often than before. Sure, I still search for the cheapest restaurant, the cheapest bank or the cheapest vegetables on offer. On the other hand, I don't feel regret when I buy a bell for my bicycle at four times the price of the cheapest one. When I sell things I made, I don't put low prices on them either. Why is that?

Tylko pieniądze

Koleżanka ostatnio narzekała na 50 EUR, na które wyceniono bukiet w pewnej kwiaciarni, podczas, gdy w drugiej chciano tylko 20 EUR. Znam te uczucie, towarzyszą mu myśli takie, jak „po co przepłacać?” i „ale oni mają tupet”. Ale teraz myślę w ten sposób o wiele rzadziej, niż kiedyś. Owszem, nadal szukam najtańszej restauracji, najtańszego banku czy najtańszych warzyw. Ale nie czuję żalu, gdy kupię dzwonek do roweru, który kosztuje cztery razy tyle, co ten najtańszy. Gdy sprzedaję rzeczy, które zrobię, też nie wyceniam ich nisko. Dlaczego?
